Abdul Sattar Edhi died at the age of 92, battling against the kidney disease for a long time. According to his son, he could not undergo kidney transplantation due to his old age. As Edhi has been facing kidney failure since 2013 and was on dialysis.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also announced a state funeral and a day of national mourning in honor of this great man, who just owned two pairs of clothes, working for orphans and needy whole of his life. However, the provincial government also announced three days of mourning.
The funeral prayer of great, legendary social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi was offered by the huge number of people in Karachi at National Stadium. Ordinary people planning to attend funeral prayers were stopped several kilometers away due to security reasons. However, some people tried to hold the coffin, but they failed. People started saying that Edhi never had distance with the poor. He stood with them shoulder to shoulder.
His coffin was enclosed with national flag and pink rose petals on it, carried on military jeep where a guard of honor was presented. According to DG ISPR General Asim Bajwa, the nineteen-gun salute was also offered and thousands of people paid tribute. COAS General Raheel Sharif and Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi also saluted the coffin while soldiers carried.
Edhi was the first one in the past 28 years to receive the state funeral after General Zia-Ul-Haq. The funeral prayers were led by Maulana Ahmed Khan Niazi after the Zuhr prayers. Among those who attended the funeral prayers was President Mamnoon Hussain, Army Chief General Raheel, Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan, the chief ministers of Sindh and Punjab and many other national politicians.
As per his wish, he was buried in the same clothes in which he died and in Edhi village, a shelter for the poor, orphans and mentally impaired. He was buried in Edhi village, as he dug his grave 25 years ago himself. In the last, he also wished to donate all his body parts but in this act of kindness only his eyes were donated and two persons will get benefit from it.
