Lionel Messi, the professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Barcelona and the Argentina national team is in the court for $4.6m unpaid taxes.
The top richest, famous and five times Ballon’dor winner soccer player Lionel Messi is in trouble nowadays for not paying tax. He along his father, who manages his financial affairs, are asked to answer tax fraud charges of more than €4m (£3m; $4.5m) after being named in Panama Papers. In 2014, the charge was only against Messi, not his father. Then a judged filed case against both of them.
The trial began on Tuesday and Thursday would be the final day for Messi to give evidence. However, Friday is expected to be the last day for trials.
While Messi came to court, some of his fans were supporting him whereas some also yelled at him saying that give the money back and telling him to go and play for Panama. The evidences are being related to his income through his image rights, including Pepsi-Cola, Adidas and others. The taxation authority demands heavy fines and prison sentences, whereas both men deny any wrongdoing. Both would have to face jail up to 22 months if found guilty.
According to some former legal advisor of Messi, they stated that Messi did not even read, studied or analyzed any contract before signing. His father and brother are both responsible for this.
Messi also stated that he trusted his father and he always signed on his order without any interrogation. Further, he added that he is not aware of any money that arrived or where it was going because according to him, he was paid by sponsors for advertisements, photos and others.
