Types of Birth Defects

birth defects When the baby is still in the womb of the mother, there might get a chance that he or she suffers from certain defects. These birth defects may range from how the organs and body parts are formed. And also how their body converts food into energy for their growth. These kinds of health and medical problems are known as the birth defects.

In total, there are over 4000 of the birth defects that are noticed in the children. These defects range from no big issues that do not need any treatment or diagnosis to those who get fatal at times.

According to a study made by the March of Dimes, “about 1 out of every 33 babies gets affected by these birth defects in America.”

Here is the list of some most commonly occurred birth defects

Structural Birth defect

If at the time of birth of the baby, any of his body parts are missing, then this kind of defects are known as structural defect. These types of defects are dangerous for the future of the baby. The defects can be treated by using any surgical methods and techniques. Heart defects are some of the most common type of structural birth defects.

Anencephaly

Anencephaly is one of the most serious birth defects in the babies. In this defect the brain or skull parts are missing. It is a type of a neural tube defect (NTD). When this neutral tube form and closes, it results in the formation of the skull and brain, spinal cord and the backbones. Anencephaly causes as the result when this Neutral tube does not close well

Anotia and Microtia

Anotia and Microtia are other fatal defects in which baby ears are missing. Anotia is the disorder in which baby’s external ear is totally missing. Microtia is the one in which his external ears are small or not formed properly resulting in baby’s inability to listen well.

Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

These are the defects when baby’s lips or mouth is not formed properly during the pregnancy period. Both these defects are collectively called as orofacial clefts. The cleft lip occurs when the tissue that forms the lips does not join completely. A cleft lip can be sometimes at one side of the lip or both sides or sometimes in the middle of the lips.

Congenital Heart Defects

CHD is the most common type of the birth disorder. It causes baby heart not structurally well and may sometimes affect the way it works as well.  Due to the medical advancement, the children that suffered from the heart disorder now are living a healthy life.

Down syndrome

It is a condition in which, when a baby is born, he has an extra chromosome. Small packages of genes in the body are known as chromosomes, people who born with an extra copy of the chromosomes, typically chromosomes 21.

These birth defects are dangerous and can affect the children in later halves of their lives. So, proper treatment should be given to the baby in the initial stages. This way, it can be cured in the start where they are possible to control.
