Diarrhea is one of the most commonly reported ailments all across the United States. According to the (ACG) American College of Gastroenterology, this is the most common disease in the country after respiratory infections.
It usually does not cause serious complication. But some time, it also becomes deadliest. Mostly it can be a fatal ailment for the younger children, especially those who have a weak immune system, according to the report of WHO.
Causes and Types of Diarrhea
A condition in which the diarrhea do not lasts more than 2 weeks is called acute diarrhea. It is more often caused by a viral infection, according to the ACG. Most of the adults got this disease by the virus named as norovirus. It is also called as “cruise ship diarrhea” because of its unfortunate tendency to infect sea-faring vacationers. Another kind of virus, which can be very effective on the younger children is called the Rotavirus.
Acute diarrhea is also caused by the bacterial infection. This infection is also called the “traveler’s diarrhea,” or “Montezuma’s revenge.” Parasites are also the common cause of the disease in many parts of the world, which can be infected when a person consumes the contaminated food or water.
A type of diarrhea that last longer than 4 weeks is called the chronic diarrhea. Like acute , it has also many causes. Some of those causes are mentioned here:
- Caused by the parasites through infections.
- Osmotic and malabsorption causes.
- Inflammatory causes.
- lessened blood flow to the intestine.
- Certain cancer therapies, like radiation.
- Certain medications, such as antibiotics.
Diarrhea is not a disease in which you have to worry a lot. But sometimes, it can create complications such as the patient lost a large amount of water from the body. Due to the dehydration, you can have lost salt and nutrients along with water from the body which can results in weakness. Some time, it can be fatal for the patient’s life as well. If someone is experience these symptoms, then the patient needs the quick medical attention.
- Dark urine or small amount of urine.
- If the patient has rapid heart rate.
- If the patient’s skin dries up.

Diarrhea is not that type of disease for which you really have to worry about. It can be over in a few days in most of the cases. In this condition, you just need to remain hydrated most of the time and have to replace the lost fluids of your body.
There are various medications suggested by the doctors in which loperamide hydrochloride and bismuth subsalicylate is common. You can also use attapulgite for this disease. These medications are not for the diarrhea, which is caused by the bacterial infection or parasites because these organisms remain trapped in the intestine of the patient if the diarrhea ceases before their excretion.
