Overview of the Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a disorder which directly affects the nervous system of the person it attacks. It is a neurological disorder which causes disturbance in the electrical activities of the brain. But, it is not necessary that everyone who is attacked also suffers the same disorders and inabilities. It may vary and can be of different types.  There are certain types of medications and treatments for the disorder which also vary according to the type of disorder and types it is causing to the patient. Epilepsy is a dangerous disorder that can unable the person’s thinking and remembering capacities.

Symptoms of Epilepsy

Epilepsy can also be termed as seizures sometime due to the neurological effect. And while a doctor is studying the patient, he must establish that whether they are seizures or not. Some are:

Generalized Seizures: All the parts of the brains get suffered from the disorder and may face the following symptoms:

  • The person sometimes cry out, make different sounds and also some rhythmic movements of legs and arms.
  • The eyes of the person are generally open.
  • Common problem is that the person loss urine quite often.
  • He/She will get confused often.
Causes and Risk Factors of the Epilepsy

In most of the cases, it is noted that the person do not even know he is suffering from the disorder or not. These cases may be found more in the children in the adult age where they do not get to know about the reasons of their problems. These are some of the risk factors and causes:

  • Brain Tumor
  • Stroke
  • Head Injury
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • The lack of oxygen when he is born.
  • Arteries of the brain get hardened
  • Some Brain Infections, e.g.: meningitis
Diagnosis of Epilepsy

A report from the CDC said that there are approximately 2.3 million adults and about 467,700 children that are living with the epilepsy. Every year, 150,000 new cases are found in the United States.

During the diagnosis, it should be kept in mind that it should be very accurate. Otherwise, there is no clear result of the treatment and diagnosis of the disorder. The doctor will ask you certain questions to know about the uncertainties and problems you face, and will ask your family members about your past. Some kinds of lab test are also done to diagnose the epilepsy.

Treatment of the Epilepsy

It is quite easy to treat epilepsy once the proper diagnosis process is done. Taking the necessary drugs is an important part in treating the disorder. Anticonvulsants and Antiepileptic drugs are a pretty effective way for treating the seizures. There are different kinds of epilepsy treating medications, such as:

  • Clonazepam (Klonopin)
  • Gabapentin (Neurontin)
  • Primidone (Mysoline)
  • Topiramate (Topamax)
